山口 薫 Kaoru Yamaguchi (1907-1968)
身近な対象や故郷の田園風景などを、独自の表現で詩情豊かに描いた。作品がたたえる豊かな詩情から「 詩魂の画家 」と評された近代日本美術を代表する洋画家。
独特の死生感を背景に、現実世界の向こう側を見据えるような視線で描かれた作品は、言語化出来ない感動を与える。また画伯の死を看取った愛犬のクマや愛娘をモティーフにした作品の数々には深く親密な雰囲気が漂っている。優れた色彩感覚と造形美によって古びることのない普遍的な詩的世界は高く評価されている。
